The Art of Floating: Foundation for Every Swimming Style

Floating is one of the first steps in learning any swimming style and is part of getting accustomed to the water. This includes breathing as well as the ability to utilize resistance. In this post, I would like to delve deeper into floating.

Safety First

Before delving into the details of swimming technique, it is important to emphasize safety in the water. Swimming should always be done under supervision, especially for beginners. Start slowly and with patience. A slow start allows you to become familiar with the water and to learn about its wonderful properties such as density, pressure, and temperature.

Confidence in the Water

An essential aspect of swimming is confidence in the water. Relaxation is central here. It is important to take the time to perceive and feel the water. With the right technique, it can support you.

Breathing Technique

The correct breathing technique is crucial for effortless, enjoyable, and professional swimming technique. Exhaling through the nose teaches controlled breathing. This should be practiced initially above the water surface and then gradually applied underwater. To do this, close your mouth, say the letter "M," or hum like a bee 😊. Later, you can practice breathing through the mouth.

Floating - Step by Step

  • Step 1 – Stand in shoulder-depth water Stand relaxed and upright in the water. Slowly bend your knees so that your shoulders are slightly underwater.

  • Step 2 – Look up & Take a breath Take a deep breath and look up at the ceiling or the sky, and stretch your arms out to the sides. With the air in your lungs, you'll become buoyant.

  • Step 3 – Lie back and sunbathe your stomach Lean back while your feet are still on the pool floor. With your gaze fixed on the ceiling, your head should now be submerged in the water up to and including your ears. Now lightly push off with your feet. Make sure not to push off towards the ceiling but in the direction of swimming, keeping your head submerged in the water. Most importantly, as the final step, sunbathe your stomach, meaning that by pushing off from the bottom, you bring your stomach to the water's surface and stretch out your legs.
